STEP BY STEP
Our Pool Closing Process
1. Site Arrival & Inspection
We call ahead before arrival, introduce ourselves at your door, and inspect the pool area before starting.
2. Water Level Adjustment
For pools using our Duck Plug system, water is kept at mid-skimmer height to preserve chemistry and minimize loss. Traditional closings lower water below the jets to prevent freeze damage.
3. Blowing Out Water Lines
Commercial-grade blowers remove all water from pool lines to prevent costly damage from frozen pipes. Our Duck Plug method avoids excessive draining, reducing water and chemical costs.
4. Winterizing Equipment
We drain and seal your pump, filter, heater, salt system, and chemical feeder. We also remove ladders, skimmer baskets, and return eyeballs.
5. Pool Closing Kit Application
A specialized chemical kit is applied to maintain water balance, prevent algae growth, and reduce the work needed at spring opening.
6. Antifreeze Protection
Pool-grade antifreeze is added to plumbing lines for extra freeze protection during Ottawa’s coldest months.
7. Safety Cover Installation
A durable, anchored safety cover is installed to handle snow and ice loads, keep out debris, and lower accident risk during the off-season.

How to Close an Inground Pool
The True Cost of Pool Closing Services in Ottawa
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How long does a pool closing appointment typically take?
Most inground pool closings take about 1–2 hours, depending on the pool setup, equipment, cover type, and any special features.
Do you close above-ground pools or only in-ground pools?
HB Pools focuses on inground pools. Above-ground pools are only serviced for existing clients already in our system. We do not take new above-ground pool clients.
What happens if I don’t close my pool before winter?
Water left in lines, equipment, lights, or features can freeze and cause damage. A proper closing helps protect plumbing, equipment, and pool components through Ottawa winters.
Can you close my pool if the water is green or has algae?
Sometimes, but HB Pools may cancel or reschedule if the water is overly contaminated or unsafe for technicians.
Do you service areas surrounding Ottawa, such as Kanata, Barrhaven, or Orleans?
Yes. HB Pools serves Ottawa and surrounding areas. Availability depends on scheduling and route planning.
What payment methods does HB Pools accept?
A credit card is required on file before service. New clients should not pay by cheque or e-transfer. Existing clients may use e-transfer after a successful credit card payment; cheques require manager approval.
What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?
If access, weather, safety, or pool condition prevents the closing from being completed, HB Pools may reschedule or cancel the appointment. Our office will guide the next steps.
Can you still close my pool on a rainy or cold day?
Light rain or cooler weather does not always stop a closing. Severe weather, unsafe conditions, or freezing risk may require rescheduling.
Is there a difference in closing a saltwater pool versus a chlorine pool?
Yes. Salt systems require specific winterization steps, including turning off the breaker, removing or cleaning the salt cell as needed, and protecting the plumbing. Saltwater pools also cannot be drained into the street in Ottawa.
How far in advance should I book my pool closing appointment?
Book as early as possible in the fall. Late closings, especially after the first week of November, may require pictures before service and may include extra fees.
Do you also handle pool openings in the spring?
Yes. HB Pools offers inground pool openings, including equipment reassembly, plumbing connection, deck equipment and light installation, system startup, and an opening kit.
What happens if damage is discovered during the closing inspection?
The technician documents the issue, explains the concern when possible, and the office may provide a quote for repair or replacement.
Is there a difference in how fiberglass, vinyl, and concrete pools are closed?
Yes. Vinyl and fiberglass pools may require different water-level and plug procedures. HB Pools services fiberglass openings and closings, but does not repair fiberglass pool structures.
Do I need to be home during the pool closing?
Not always, but HB Pools must have safe access to the backyard and pool equipment. If the gate is locked and no access instructions are provided, the service may not be completed.
Can you close a pool that also has a hot tub or attached spa?
Yes, if it is part of the pool system and can be properly winterized. Spillover spas require extra steps, including draining, blowing out lines, adding antifreeze, and plugging return lines.
