Step 1: Gather Your Pool Opening Supplies

Before you start, make sure you have everything on hand:

Pool Equipment:

  • Telescopic pole, pool brush, and skimmer net

  • Submersible pump (essential if you have a tarp cover)

  • Channel locks or duck plug wrench

  • Garden hose

  • Silicone lubricant for o-rings and plugs

  • Screw drivers

Pool Chemicals & Testing:

  • Pool opening kit (chlorine shock, algaecide, stain & scale remover)

  • Test strips or a test kit

  • Bucket for mixing chemicals (if needed)

  • Optional: New anti-electrolysis device, Nature 2 cartridge

💡 Tip: If you’re unsure what your filtration system needs for start-up, call HB Pools—we’re happy to help!

Step 2: Remove and Store the Pool Cover

For Standard Tarp Covers:

  • Use a skimmer to remove debris.

  • Pump off water from the cover.

  • Clean with mild soap and let it dry completely before folding.

For Safety Covers:

  • Brush and rinse debris with a hose before removal.

  • Dry fully before storing to prevent mold.

  • Lubricate the cover anchors to ensure smooth use next season.

💡 Never store a wet cover—mildew will ruin it.

Step 3: Reinstall All Pool Components

Remove winter plugs from skimmer, returns, and equipment. Then:

  • Reinstall return jets (aim 45° down and away).

  • Add skimmer baskets and weir doors.

  • Reconnect pump and filtration system securely.

  • Inspect and lubricate all o-rings for pump, filter, chlorinator and salt cell.

  • Inspect and reinstall ladders and rails (only if bumpers are in good shape).

Have an Aqua Genie skimmer?
Replace the solid gasket with a slotted one and reattach the jet facing downward.

Step 4: Fill the Pool

Fill your pool halfway up the skimmer. If you’ve lost a lot of water, schedule a leak test before moving forward.

Step 5: Start the Pool Equipment

  • Prime the pump with water.

  • For sand filters, backwash 2–3 minutes and rinse for 30 seconds before switching to “filter.”

  • Turn on the system and inspect for leaks or sounds.

For heater issues: Do not start unless inspected by a licensed gas fitter.

Step 6: Test and Balance Your Water

With the system running, check all your key levels:

Parameter

Ideal Range

pH

7.2 – 7.6

Total Alkalinity

80 – 120 ppm

Chlorine

1 – 3 ppm

Calcium Hardness

200 – 400 ppm

Cyanuric Acid

30 – 50 ppm

  • Add chlorine shock.

  • Apply algaecide.

  • Adjust pH and total alkalinity if needed.

💡 Never mix chemicals directly. Add them separately, either directly to the pool or pre-dissolved in a bucket.

Step 7: Final Inspection & Clean-Up

  • Brush and vacuum the pool (vacuum only if algae is dead and settled).

  • Check for cracks, loose fittings, or leaks.

  • Ensure all water features and jets are working.

  • Replace your Nature 2 cartridge or anti-electrolysis device if applicable.

If you use Aqua Lamps, note that HB Pools no longer services them, but we can quote a reliable replacement.
